At least 15 people, suspected seasonal workers, were killed today in an accident in the US, when an off-road vehicle with 27 people on board, collided directly with a heavy truck in southern California.
The tragedy happened this morning when the Ford Expedition was traveling on a gravel truck road, on the Route 115 highway in Imperial, 100 km east of San Diego and a few miles from the border with Mexico.
ABC News reported that 14 of the victims had died on the spot while the 15th on the way to the hospital. The driver of the truck that hit the SUV suffered only minor injuries.
One person was seen receiving medical treatment on the side of the road, while 12 survivors in the Ford vehicle had also suffered serious injuries.
The Televisa Mexicali network reported that those killed may have been seasonal workers, while their identities have not yet been published.
Footage from the scene showed the truck ‘stuck’ on the side of the SUV, in the middle of the road, and police officers who had blocked traffic for the investigation.
The head of the fire department in Imperial, Sal Flores, described the accident as an ‘incident with many loss of life’. No information has yet been released on the cause of the tragedy or why there were so many people inside the Ford SUV.
Authorities added that four survivors had been taken to Palm Springs Regional Hospital, three of whom are in intensive care. The other survivors are being treated at El Centro Regional Medical Center, whose spokesman, Adolphe Edward, said: “Patients are in serious condition. “This was a major accident.”
Four medical helicopters and five fire engines were at the scene.
