Two police officers were shot dead today in western Germany as they were conducting a routine check of a vehicle on the highway.
The gruesome incident happened around 4:20 a.m. when officers had stopped a car near the town of Kusel in the Rhineland-Palatinate, near the border with France.
The 29-year-old officer and the 24-year-old officer were shot dead by the car they had stopped for the event all the security forces in Germany were set in motion to catch the perpetrators. Roads in the area where the killing took place were closed as authorities urged people not to take passengers during the trip, as at least one of the suspects is armed.
The motive for the killings remains unclear to authorities at least so far, at this stage of the investigation. The German daily Bild said the officers had sent two radio messages from the street where they were.
In the first they said they had stopped a suspected vehicle where they had found in the luggage a dead game animal. In the second message, shortly after the first, it was said: “They are shooting at us!” and then contact was cut off.
