Albanian citizens vote today to elect new mayors in the country’s six municipalities.
654,538 voters in Durrës, Shkodër, Dibër, Lushnje, Rrogozhinë e Vora have been called to elect the mayors of their municipalities who will have a 1-year term.
According to the CEC, there are 10,134 voters voting for the first time, while 135 citizens were not included in the lists due to decriminalization. As in any election process, voting will begin at 7 a.m. to end at 7 p.m. The only municipality selected to vote electronically will be Vora.
In addition to Dibra, there are 3 potential candidates facing each other, from the Socialist Party, the Democratic Party and the House of Freedom coalition, led by former Prime Minister Berisha.
Based on the history of elections, except Shkodra where in 30 years the municipality is run only from the right, the other 5 municipalities are run sometimes from the left and sometimes from the right.
Shkodra seems to be the most difficult confrontation to predict. On Sunday, it will be decided whether it will continue to stand on the right, or join the map with the other 60 Socialist-led municipalities, following the opposition boycott of the elections.
