At least 24 people have been killed when a passenger bus veered off a bridge and plunged about 45 meters into a river valley in Kenya.
The serious and unexplained accident has so far been attributed to brake system failure, although this is a very rare occurrence according to experts.
The Modern Coast company bus was traveling from Meru to the port city of Mombasa when it went off the Nithi bridge, writes the local Daily Nation and Standard.
Senior police official Rono Bunei said that the vehicle “must have suffered brake failure as it was at high speed when the incident occurred”.
Police Commissioner Nobert Komora: “It is with sadness that we announce the death of 24 people in a horrific accident at the infamous Nithi River bridge on the Meru-Nairobi highway.”
Harrowing footage from the scene shows the serious consequences of the crash and the completely destroyed bus.
It is not clear how many people were traveling on the bus at the time of the crash, but authorities have confirmed 24 deaths so far.
The event comes amid several serious accidents in the East African country.
On July 8, 20 people were killed in a serious accident on the highway from the capital Nairobi to the coastal city of Mombasa.
