The G7 foreign ministers will meet in Germany today to discuss food security.
Ukraine is one of the world’s leading exporters of wheat and sunflower oil. But exports have become difficult, following Russian attacks and the presence of the army in the Black Sea.
Developing countries, which are dependent on Ukrainian products are facing shortages and rising prices as a result.
The G7 summit will include representatives from the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Italy, France, Japan, the United States and the European Union.
The foreign ministers of Ukraine and Moldova will also be there, amid concerns that the war could spread to Moldova as well.
The G7 countries are expected to try to calm Moldova, which is struggling to cope with the growing number of refugees coming from Ukraine, as well as the incident involving pro-Russian separatists in the separatist region of Transnistria.
“Currently there are 25 million tons of grain stuck in the Ukrainian port of Odessa, which means food for millions of people in the world who are in urgent need, especially in African countries and the Middle East. That is why we are sending a clear signal today: we see you, we hear you and we support you, “said German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.
The several-day G7 summit ends on Saturday.
