Four teenagers fell from a cliff by the ocean in southern California last night, authorities announced, adding that a boy lost his life and two girls were seriously injured.
A fourth person who sustained minor injuries had managed to recover on the rock and notified a police officer passing in the area.
A 25-year-old from Los Angeles died at the scene, while two girls were taken to hospital by helicopter, where they are in danger of death.
Television footage showed Los Angeles firefighting helicopters flying one of the victims over the cliff as police said they were investigating the incident as an accident.
25-year-old survivor Vincent Avila from Los Angeles, was hospitalized with several broken ribs, the network reported KNBC-TV .
“This is a miracle,” said his mother Irma, interviewed by the media.
Her son said the four friends had gone to the rocks Sunday night to stay together.
One of the girls then went to the toilet at the foot of the cliff where she slipped and fell. The other three had approached the edge of the cliff to look for their friend but they too fell into darkness.
Palos Verdes Rocks is located on the peninsula of the same name south of Los Angeles. A 91-meter-long abyss over the Pacific Ocean follows their length.
The area is known for similar accidents over the years and even for suicide.
