A poultry farm has all been shut down in a few days, 4,270 ducks have died for 1 week in a row although according to the farmer he has notified the state authorities from the beginning.
Ardian Daiu, the owner of the farm, told Fiks that he suspected that it was bird flu, and for this he wants to tell the truth.
Meanwhile district veterinarians have gone to the farm and initially given a medication to the birds who were dying en masse every day.
Faced with this situation, they have sought the help of villagers to treat sick birds, which has caused 5 of them to end up in hospital with high fever, one of whom returned from the hospital tells reporters the symptoms, “We all got sick when we treated the ducks, 5 of us went with a high temperature of up to 40 degrees, we stayed in the hospital for 2-3 days,” says one of the workers.
In the face of mass deaths, veterinarians along with villagers and the farm owner have buried birds next to the fish-breeding reservoir, digging small holes with shovels and burying cadaver.
When there were only 50 heads left out of 4200 then the veterinarians decided to analyze the birds both dead and two alive to understand the cause of death.
Thus, on a farm for 10 days in a row, and why there were mass deaths, the analysis was not seen as reasonable, but the help of the villagers was sought for burial, allowing anyone to enter a farm who had an unidentified disease, and thus endangering the inhabitants.
So the farm was left un quarantined, and the burials were done without protocols. Area veterinarians, who have been on the ground from the beginning justify that it was impossible for 2 people to treat such a large number of birds.
And that their superiors have informed about the whole situation.
The latter, specifically the chief veterinarian of Fier Region, Andon Çuko, admitted the failure to manage the situation. He said that no one should be allowed to enter the area, except the veterinary service, while he explains that the burial has not been done properly so they will be exhumed and reburied again.
As soon as the Fix reporters left, the birds were reburied in a pit which this time opens with a digger and away from the reservoir.
Meanwhile, the answer to the analysis from the Institute of Food Safety and Veterinary was given after 9 days, and this answer came out after Fiksi went. The birds came out sick with salmonella excluding bird flu.
The investigative show Fiks Fare asked for an answer from the Ministry of Agriculture about the situation, asking for specific answers if the ministry was aware of the situation, when it was officially announced, they followed the protocols in the landfill, why was the farm not quarantined?
Why was the exhumation and reburial of dead birds done? And above all, who was wrong?
In its response, the Ministry of Agriculture claims that the area has been quarantined from the beginning, while Fiksi proved with a view that there was no quarantine. Then in this answer it is said that the burial was done according to the protocol and the excavations and then the re-burials are not mentioned. So the ministry does not know what happened on the ground, but only speaks on the basis of letters without making checks.
