On the day when Greece recorded the highest number of daily infections since the beginning of the pandemic, 9,284 new cases, almost half of them in Athens alone, but also 66 victims and 629 intubated, the Minister of Health announced new measures that will enter into force from 3 to 16 January with the possibility of extension if necessary.
The measures suggested by the experts include: work from home for 50% of public sector employees, while it is suggested that this practice be applied in the private sector as well. It is also mandatory to use a high protection mask or double mask in the supermarket or urban service vehicles.
“As for entertainment and restaurants, there will be opening hours until 12:00 in the evening and at the same time entertainment will not be allowed for customers who are standing, while in restaurants up to six people will be allowed for the table. There should also be distance storage. “If there are violations of these measures, the music that is currently allowed will be banned,” said Thanos Plevris, Minister of Health.
The government also decided to limit participation in sports activities in stadiums to 10% of capacity or an upper limit of 1,000 people, while citizens visiting family members in care homes will only be allowed after a molecular test in the last 40 hours and in hospitals will intensify controls on visitors.
The new measures come just days after the government announced last week banning public Christmas celebrations and resuming wearing masks outdoors.
While an even greater increase in infections is expected in the coming days, the Greek minister has announced that 75% of daily cases are people from 20 to 59 years old, while only 6% belong to the age group over 60 years.
