The 500-page South dress, the Lunxhëria women’s dress, the vests or stockings embroidered in gold, the almost lost motifs of the folk costume decor are being brought back to life in Gjirokastra by the stylist Lizeta Hatika.
Work to recreate some of the clothing has required field research, consulting with researchers and adapting materials.
Currently the demands coming from the Albanians of the diaspora and the tourist market have encouraged Lizeta to look to the tradition and bring back the completed clothes of some provinces.
Gjirokastra has been the second most important center of embroidery and costumes after Istanbul since the late Middle Ages. Well-known public figures, diplomats, warriors, intellectuals and travelers have ordered their clothes in the city. Lizeta and many other hard-working artisans are returning to the Gjirokastra bazaar its traditional character as the heart of handicrafts and crafts.
