A 22-year-old Robert Crimo has been taken into custody by police as the main suspect in the shootings that overshadowed the 4th of July celebrations in the US.
6 people were killed during the Independence Day Parade held in Highland Park, on the outskirts of Chicago. The attacker had climbed onto a roof and from there, opened fire on citizens who had come out to celebrate the Independence Day of the United States. The young man tried to get away, but after a short car chase he was arrested “without incident,” said Police Chief Lou Jogmen.
Armed violence is turning into an epidemic, he will not give up the fight against it, declared President Joe Biden, who expressed his shock at the pain caused to the American community on a day marked for him. A witness at the scene said that initially the shots were exchanged for fireworks. I didn’t realize it was a firearm, he said, it was only when I saw a person bleeding and screaming that I realized what had happened.
“We had a hard time understanding what was going on at first because it sounded like the sound of fireworks, and this is the 4th of July, you know, that’s how it’s celebrated. But then suddenly, a group of people started running away and that’s when we realized that something was wrong”, says witness Emily Prazak.
Emergency officials said dozens of people, including children, were treated at the hospital for gunshot wounds and some of the injured were in critical condition.
The parade started at 10:00 a.m. local time and was interrupted 10 minutes after shots were fired. Hundreds of people – some bloodied – were then seen fleeing in panic. Hours after the Chicago shooting, two police officers were injured in a shooting in Philadelphia during July 4th celebrations. Illinois Governor Jap Robert Pritzker warned that mass shootings are becoming an “American tradition”.
