Eight Turkish citizens have been taken hostage today in the Haitian capital, the Associated Press reported, suggesting the continuation of a series of high-profile hostages by local criminal gangs.
The Turkish consul in the country, Hugues Josue, said the kidnapped group had boarded a bus in the neighboring Dominican Republic but were stopped and taken hostage on Sunday evening in Croix-des-Bouquets on the outskirts of the capital Port-au-Prince.
Josue said there is no information on a possible cash reward claim.
The Croix-des-Bouquets area is in fact controlled by the 400 Mawozo group, which at the end of last year had taken hostage 17 members of a group of American Christian missionaries.
For the latter the group demanded a $ 1 million ransom while holding them hostage until December.
A diplomat from the Dominican Republic was taken hostage in the same area earlier this month, who was later released.
Haiti police have announced that one of the leaders of the 400 Mawozo gang, Germine Joly, has already been extradited to the US.
Violence and insecurity in Haiti have sparked protests in recent weeks to demand more security in residential areas.
