The 83rd anniversary of the Albanian anti-fascist resistance is commemorated today in Durrës.
Local authorities, veterans and families of the martyrs paid tribute to the monument of the People’s Hero Mujo Ulqinaku, which became a symbol of resistance in those difficult days for the country. Attendees honored the memory of those who gave their lives to stop the fascist occupation.
“This is a special day for me and my whole family. How I have become so every year we come here. We remember the grandfather and the hero. I also thank Durrës that has always appreciated the work of our grandfather “, says Ilda Ulqinaku, the granddaughter of the hero Mujo Ulqinaku.
In the first hours of April 7, 1939, fascist Italy started the invasion of Albania from the port of Durres. Although with few weapons and forces, the invaders were greeted with weapons by Captain Mujo Ulqinaku and other fighters, repelling the Italian troops several times.
The Albanian resistance on the coast was broken only after being hit by heavy artillery by fascist troops. After the invasion of the city, the war moved to the streets and alleys, while the invaders continued towards the capital, Tirana.
