The new German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, met with other European Union leaders at the Brussels summit.
Russian antagonism on the border with Ukraine dominated the agenda after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron, as well as European Council President Charles Michel.
Scholz held talks with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, reports DW.
“We reiterate that the inviolability of borders is an important basis for peace in Europe. “Together we will do everything to make this inviolability worthwhile,” said Scholz.
The German chancellor’s attendance at the European Council meeting came a day after his inaugural address to the Bundestag and a series of crises the EU has to face, including ongoing tensions with Russia and its ally Belarus, as well as coronavirus pandemic and high energy prices.
The EU was already planning to discuss possible sanctions it could impose if Russia pursued aggressive action against Ukraine.
Zelenskyy called on European leaders to impose sanctions immediately instead of waiting.
Russia invaded and annexed Crimea – a region of Ukraine in the Black Sea – in 2014, and has since supported pro-Russian separatist fighters in the eastern Donbas region.
Moscow intends to keep Ukraine from getting too close to the EU and NATO, constantly demanding that the possibility of accession be removed from the table.
EU and NATO leaders have opposed the request to exclude possible membership, but also say Kiev is still a long way from joining any organization.
