Police in Paris responded Monday night to a hostage situation at a store in the 12 Arrondissement area in central Paris.
A man armed with a knife reportedly held at least two women hostage in the shop from 4pm local time and demanded to speak to the justice minister.
Police have set up a security perimeter in the area as some sources identified the attacker as having a mental illness.
Zv. the mayor of Paris, Emmanuel Grégor, urged people to avoid the area as he said he was personally going to the scene.
French media said the attacker also sought to contact lawyer Omar Raddad.
Raddad, a former Moroccan gardener, was convicted in 1994 of killing his wealthy employer Ghislaine Marchal.
Raddad has already served his sentence but has always insisted he is innocent and seeks to clear his name.
