– The situation in Idlib
At the Astana meeting in 2017, Turkey, Russia and Iran decided to create 4 “de-escalation zones” in the area that is not under the control of the Assad regime.
The regime, terrorists backed by Iran and Russia continued their attacks, occupying 3 of the 4 regions and heading towards Idlib. Although Turkey reached an additional agreement to strengthen the ceasefire with Russia in September 2018, the attacks intensified again in May 2019. Following the new agreement between Turkey and Russia on March 5, 2020, the ceasefire has been largely maintained.
Approximately 2 million civilians fleeing attacks during the period 2017-2020 were forced to migrate to regions near the Turkish border.
