A whopping $ 145,000 has cost a ton of fish at the traditional Tokyo New Year auction.
This is the highest price paid for a tuna in the first auction of the year as demand had fallen since the pandemic began.
The first fish auction of the year at Toyosu Market is a tradition that attracts crowds of traders
Bidders often pay a lot of money to win the highest priced tone, which is seen as something that brings good luck as well as a lot of publicity to the buyer.
The fish in question weighed about 211 kilograms, and was caught in the northern Aomori region of Japan.
It was then handed over to a restaurant in Tokyo’s Omotesando neighborhood to be sliced and fillets for the public.
