The number of global COVID infections has exceeded 300 million. It took more than a year to reach 100 million and only five months for the last 100 million infected, as the world faces the highly contagious Omicron variant.
London health professionals and patients have been hit hard by the Omicron variant, prompting the government to send 200 members of the military, including 40 doctors, to the city’s hospitals.
Critics of the country’s Health Service say the massive proliferation of Omicron is exposing the flaws of the country’s medical system. The governor of West Virginia in the United States said Thursday that because of the Omicron variant he is seeking authorization from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to provide a fourth dose of the COVID vaccine to residents 50 years and older in his state.
The World Health Organization says a new variant of the coronavirus recently discovered in France is no cause for concern currently. Scientists at a medical foundation in Marseille say they discovered the new variant in December on 12 patients living near the city. The first patient tested positive after traveling to Cameroon, Africa.
The researchers said they had identified 46 mutations in the new variant, which could make it more resistant to vaccines and more contagious than the original coronavirus.
