Tensions in Ukraine have shifted attention to the confrontation of two major powers: the United States and Russia.
But the EU does not want to be sidelined in a conflict that affects itself. The European Commission and France have expressed the need for European involvement, at a time when Moscow and the West continue to face each other, currently only at the diplomatic level, as the risk of an escalation of the conflict is great.
“One thing is clear: There is no solution without Europe. Whatever the solution, Europe must be involved“, Stated the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Lyen. The United States and its European partners have threatened Russia with serious consequences if it invades Ukraine.
Thousands of Russian troops continue to pile up at the border. Moscow insists on the idea that it must receive assurances that there will be no further NATO enlargement from the east, a move it sees as a threat to itself. Von der Leyen recalled that the European Union “is very present” in Ukraine, including through the billion-dollar aid it gives to Kiev.
French President Emmanuel Macron also welcomed the direct US-Russia talks, which will begin next week, but said that “the European security architecture” is “up to us to build”.
