European Parliament President David Sassoli has been hospitalized in Italy since December 26 for “serious complications” related to his immune system, his office said today.
All his official activities have been canceled. Sassoli, an Italian center-left politician, was also treated at a French hospital for pneumonia in September.
“This hospitalization was necessary due to a serious complication due to a malfunction of the immune system,” the statement said.
Sassoli, 65, has been speaker of parliament since 2019. His term expires this month and is not expected to be extended. Due to illness, he has been unable to chair parliament in Strasbourg in recent weeks and has missed the European Commission’s annual events on the EU’s situation in September.
