British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss arrived in Moscow on February 9 for a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
Truss’s visit to Russia comes at a time when European leaders are trying to ease tensions, following the gathering of Russian troops near Ukraine, in what the West suspects may be preparing for a possible invasion.
“In Moscow to meet with Foreign Minister Lavrov and make it clear that Russia must immediately withdraw its troops and respect Ukraine’s sovereignty, or face major consequences,” Truss wrote on Twitter. after arriving in the Russian capital.
“Any invasion would be a big mistake. “Diplomacy is the only way forward and Russia must follow that path,” she added.
Truss’s visit comes just a day after French President Emmanuel Macron wrapped up a diplomatic tour, meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
On February 9, Macron met in Berlin with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Polish President Adrzej Duda. The French president called for dialogue with the Kremlin and said this is the only way forward.
European leaders have vowed to be united in their stance to reduce tensions.
Russia has said it has no plans to invade Ukraine, but has demanded security guarantees that NATO will never accept Ukraine and that the military alliance stop eastward expansion.
