This is the story of a family from Farka of Tirana which for four generations, deals with pottery and clay products.
“I learned from my father, my father was taught by my grandfather and so for 4 generations we have worked clay pots and pans in Farka“.
The elders of Bashkim Plaku from Farka decided on his future. He, too, would shape the clay by removing the earthenware vessels from his hands.
To be a potter you have to have patience, as an earthen casserole requires 10 days of work. The potter says that the clay pots give a special flavor to the food. For this reason Union earthenware pans are sought after by housewives and premises across the country.
“We start with the raw material that is in Farka, which must be taken over half a meter underground, then we transport it and leave it in a container for 24 hours with water, then I work on that old machine and finally I give it form which must stand for weeks to dry until the baking process arrives”.
Who buys these pans?
“In the beginning, only Central Albania wanted them, but now pans are required from Himara to Theth.”
Do you see it as a profession or a passion?
“I have not dreamed of any other job except this profession. “Clay is everything to me, I feel pleasure when I work with it, when I deal with it I forget everything”.
After much effort, Bashkimi managed to inherit this profession from his young son, but unlike his father, he wants to make modern clay pots.
