Dërvengrad (Kustendorf), also known as Meqavnik, is a traditional village in western Serbia, in the Zlatibor area, located near the village of Mokra Gora at the junction of the Zlatibor and Tara mountains. With its appearance and authenticity, the village attracts the attention of numerous visitors from the country and abroad.
The village was founded and built on Meqavnik Hill by director Emir Kusturica for the shooting of “Life is a Miracle” in 2003 and 2004, according to the Anadolu Agency (AA).
Dërvengrad, which means “Wooden City”, is a traditional village in the shape and structure of the city. At one end is the entrance gate, from where the main road starts and extends to the other end where there is a wooden Orthodox church. In the central part of the village there is a square, paved with wooden blocks and cut wooden thresholds and surrounded by wooden houses.
The village streets are named after celebrities of culture, science and sports. One street in the village is named after world-famous Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic, while another is named after Ivo Andric, a Yugoslav writer and Nobel laureate in literature.
The square in the village is named after the legendary Argentine footballer Diego Armando Maradona.
An expert jury of the Brussels Foundation for Architecture “Philippe Rotthier” in 2005 declared this work of director Kusturica as the best architectural achievement in the past three years.
Since 2008, the village has hosted the annual Kustendorf Film and Music Festival, featuring films and music from around the world.
In 2010, the village was visited by world-famous actor Johnny Depp.
Director Emir Kusturica describes the village of Dërvengrad with the words: “I invented a city that seems to have always been inhabited, when in fact, it has never been inhabited.”
