High-voltage cables that fell on a market in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, killed 26 people.
The death toll is said to have been high due to the large amount of water on the floor in the market area.
In a statement, the national electricity company said it believed lightning had struck part of the cable, causing it to fall to the ground.
Local media report that most of the victims are business women.
“The cable broke and fell into a canal that was filled with water after the morning rain.” said for the AFP news agency, Charles Mbutamuntu, spokesman for the Kinshasa provincial government.
Mbutamuntu said the bodies had been sent to the morgue and an investigation into the incident had begun.
One trader said the market was often flooded when it rained, with workers and shoppers having to cross the water.
