The United States is creating a new unit to assist in the investigation and prosecution of domestic terrorism cases, with the emphasis on increasing threats and increasing cases.
U.S. Assistant Attorney General Matthew Olsen told lawmakers Tuesday he was setting up a new unit within the Department of Justice’s Department of Homeland Security to “ensure that these cases are handled.” properly and effectively ”.
“The threat posed by domestic terrorism is growing,” Olsen told the Senate Judiciary Committee. “We have seen a growing threat from those motivated by racial hostility, as well as those who support extremist anti-government and anti-authority ideologies.”
Mr. Olsen said that since March 2020 the Federal Bureau of Investigation has doubled the number of investigations into domestic terrorism while intelligence reports suggest these threats may continue. Mr. Olsen’s testimony comes less than a week after the United States marked the first anniversary of the Jan. 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol. To date, more than 725 people have been arrested in connection with their riots. More than 325 of them have been charged with criminal offenses.
