Less than a few hours later, Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Kingdom withdrew from a statement he gave to the BBC that in the face of pressure from a Russian occupation, his country could withdraw its application for NATO membership.
Vadym Prystaiko insisted that the English media giant’s previous report was the result of a misunderstanding.
“We are not currently members of NATO, and to avoid war we are ready for many concessions, and this is what we are doing in talks with the Russians“, Said the ambassador.
“This is not about the alliance, it is something defined in the Constitution. “It’s not too late for our ambitions to be in NATO – what we are talking about is that we are not in that family right now, so we have to look for something like bilateral agreements with the UK, with the United States.” he tried to clarify, adding: “So, before NATO we are looking for some other agreements that will allow us to survive in this particular test now.”
Asked again if Ukraine was changing its approach to becoming a NATO member, this time he said “No”.
Earlier, Prystaiko told BBC Radio 5 that the country, due to threats and blackmail, would consider “serious concessions”, including giving up the goal of becoming part of the North Atlantic alliance. which is also the main reason for Russia’s anger and the situation in which the country finds itself today.
