China has denied reports that it had any prior knowledge of Russia’s attack on Ukraine, and has asked Moscow to postpone the start of the offensive until the end of the Olympics.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said today that the New York Times article was “merely fake news, shifting guilt and disgusting.”
The New York Times quoted a Western intelligence report as credible, saying senior Chinese officials had some direct knowledge of Russia’s plans or intentions for war before launching the attack.
China also said it abstained from yesterday’s UN resolution calling for an immediate end to Moscow’s attack on Ukraine and the withdrawal of all Russian troops, as Beijing said “the draft resolution was not subject to full consultation with all member states and did not take into account the history and complexity of the current crisis ”.
