On the 25th day of the invasion of Ukraine, the city of Mariupol was attacked again by Russian forces, who destroyed a school that housed at least 400 people.
Ukrainian authorities also say that as a result of the attacks, the Azovstal metallurgical plant, one of the largest in Europe, was destroyed.
It is not yet known if there are any victims, but the next attack in Mariupol comes after the one that took place in the theater in the center of the city where thousands of people were sheltered.
“Children, the elderly are dying. The city is ruined, it is disappearing from the face of the earth“Said Mariupol police officer Michail Vershnin from a road full of rubble heading west.
The southeastern city of Mariupol has been under siege for several weeks as residents are reportedly being sent to Russia against their will by Russian forces.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the ongoing Russian attack on Mariupol was an “act of terror” that would be “remembered for centuries.”
In a video message posted on Facebook on Sunday, he said Mariupol would go down in history as an example of war crimes.
If Mariupol falls, it would give Russia control of one of Ukraine’s largest ports and create a land corridor between Crimea and the Russian-backed regions of Luhansk and Donetsk. Crimea’s connection to mainland Russia via controlled areas by the rebels would make it much easier for Russia to move goods and people to and from Crimea.
Russia has been demanding this since 2014, when the conflict in the east began.
