Italy and Denmark have announced the mass expulsions of Russian diplomats, following reports of suspected atrocities in the Ukrainian city of Bucha.
Danish Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod said on April 5 that the Russian ambassador to Copenhagen had been informed that 15 members of the embassy staff would be deported and that the Danish government had “strongly condemned” the actions of Russian soldiers in Bucha.
Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio also told the TV channel, RAI-news-24, that Rome had informed Moscow that 30 Russian diplomats should leave the country for “reasons of national security”.
“Through this decision, we are sending a clear message to Moscow that we will not allow Russian intelligence officials to spy on Danish soil,” Kofod said in a statement.
“They pose a threat to our national security that we can not ignore. “Together with a number of close allies, we have encountered espionage carried out by identified persons, under the guise of diplomatic status,” he added.
The Danish statement said the diplomats have 14 days to leave the country.
Di Maio has not indicated the deadline for the diplomats to leave.
In response to these actions, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told the TASS news agency that Moscow would take “appropriate measures.”
