German intelligence officials say they have overheard radio broadcasts during which they say members of Russian troops are being heard discussing the killing of indiscriminate civilians in Ukraine.
Such a development refutes Moscow’s claims that acts of atrocities were committed only after its army withdrew from the outskirts of the occupied territories near Kiev.
German officials, who briefed members of parliament on Wednesday, spoke about two separate communications in which Russian soldiers described how they had interrogated Ukrainian soldiers and civilians before shooting them to death.
The German newspaper Der Spiegel reported that one of the Russian soldiers was heard saying that he had shot a person on a bicycle.
Earlier this week, aerial photographs independently verified by The New York Times showed a Russian armored vehicle firing on a civilian on a bicycle in Buca. It is not clear if the person in the video was the same as the one mentioned in the radio message.
Although Moscow denies targeting civilians during what it calls a special military operation, last week the world public strongly condemned Russia as photos and footage from the Bucha massacre scene were shown. The bodies of the killed civilians were found lying on the street after Russian forces withdrew from some of the villages north of Kiev.
Buca Mayor Anatoliy Fedoruk told VOA’s Russian Service that he was shocked by what he saw, bodies being thrown into the streets and destruction in the city.
The United States and its Western allies have launched war crimes investigations into the Bucharest and other Ukrainian cities, and President Joe Biden has said that Russian President Vladimir Putin must face a war crimes trial./VOA
