Donations worth 10.8 billion euros have been raised at an international donors’ conference to collect aid for refugees from Ukraine in Warsaw.
Of the total funding, € 1 billion comes from the European Commission and another € 1 billion from a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to cover the needs of displaced people.
“The solidarity of countries, companies and people around the world is shedding some light on this dark hour,” said EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. “We will continue to provide support. And once the bombs have stopped dropping, we will help the people of Ukraine rebuild their country. “We will continue to stand for Ukraine,” she said.
Another important donor was Germany. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz pledged 425m euros in humanitarian and development aid to Ukraine. To this is added 70 million euros in medical assistance.
The conference was organized by the European Commission, non-governmental organizations, Global Citizen, and the Canadian government. Poland has so far hosted more than 2.5 million of the 4.4 million refugees who have been forced out of war zones in Ukraine.
