The tennis world has reacted with disbelief as the two title favorites Paula Badosa and Jannik Sinner withdrew from the quarterfinals of the Miami Open tennis competition after feeling bad during their matches.
Further number 3 in the world for women Badosa was forced to leave the game tearful after breathing problems and water bubbles in the leg, in front of the American Jessica Pegula.
Earlier in the week Badosa had admitted he was unsure if he would compete in the fourth round, which he subsequently won.
But the Spaniard, believed to be in top form, could barely stand on his feet before retreating from the 4-1 losing game.
In the men’s draw, Italian phenomenon Sinner was also forced to retreat against Francisco Cerundolo who was ranked 103rd in the world.
After the impressive match where the Italian defeated the Australian Nick Kyrgios in the fourth round, Sinner said there were water bubbles in the legs.
Cerundolo admitted he could not believe he saw his friend “barely walking from one side of the field to the other.”
“I did not know he was so bad, I hope he does well, he is a great tennis player,” said the colleague.
In total, there have been 15 game abandonments or withdrawals from the competition at the Miami Open.
Fans have been left shocked at one of the most inexplicable events in the world of tennis, as many of them failed to go a full match of their idols.
