The mayor of Houston has demanded that the state of Texas pay, in some cases, the astronomical energy bills that went to residents during last week’s frost.
The bill should go to the state of Texas, Sylvester Turner told CBS News. Some residents have reported bills of 16 thousand dollars, for several days of energy use. Temperatures dropped to a level not seen in 30 years, at -18 degrees Celsius.
Much of Texas, which usually experiences mild winters, was covered in snow. Unusual weather in some southern American states has claimed the lives of at least 70 people. Texas is recovering from frost but many residents must continue to boil the water for fear of contamination. Millions of Texans, meanwhile, have experienced power outages. Now energy is back in almost the entire state, but about 30,000 customers are still without electricity.
Texas has a chaotic energy market allowing consumers to choose from a number of suppliers. Most have fixed payment plans, but as temperatures soared, many exaggerated tariffs were applied. A Dallas resident and Army veteran Scott Willoughbby said he had received a $ 16,000 bill, which even exceeded his life savings.
