“The process of accession to the European Union of the small country on the Adriatic coast can materialize faster than expected, and due to the Russian occupation of Ukraine”, writes the French newspaper Liberation, referring to the process of Albania’s membership in the EU.
“The goals are clear; to unite politically and strengthen the Western Balkans militarily “, the article continues.
Liberation’s attention has been particularly drawn to the NATO military base in Kuçova. 75 Soviet fighter jets rust on the runway at the military base in Kuçova. However, this former communist base seems ready to regain its shine as NATO’s new operational center. Its restructuring, launched in 2018, was accelerated by the Ukrainian crisis which further favors cooperation within the camp against Putin and the strengthening of the defense of territories in which the conflict may extend.
“The change in the context of global security has now given a significant impetus to the completion of the project.”said a NATO official when asked about this base where the runway is being restored, the control tower is being modernized, new storage units are being built… This work, which should be completed in 2023, is funded by transatlantic alliance funds, which has already allocated more than $ 55 million to the project since its inception in 2018.
Offering support to NATO forces already present, particularly at the Bondsteel camp in Kosovo, the Kucova air base continues, it will be a key strategic asset in a politically unstable region.
