The U.S. Marine family said the footage resembled an espionage film.
Russian pilot Konstantin Yaroshenko, who has spent 12 years in a US prison, was exchanged yesterday with US Marine Trevor Reed who was sentenced to nine years in prison by Moscow in 2020.
Diplomats said the exchange was possible after a “long negotiation process”.
Today it was revealed that the exchange had taken place in Turkey.
Trevor’s father, Joey Reed, told the American media: “It was like watching a movie, they went after each other like once in an exchange of spies.”
The picture shows a Russian plane and an American plane parked at the airport at a distance from each other.
Already the two ex-prisoners are escorted towards each other accompanied by officials, some of whom shake hands as Reed and Yaroshenko walk towards their respective planes.
A pilot looks tearful as he exits the plane to wait for the prisoner.
Relations between the two countries are at their lowest point in decades since Russia’s war in Ukraine, which Moscow says is in fact “a US war at the hands of Ukraine.”
While Washington has agreed to return Konstantin Yaroshenko, a Russian pilot who was serving a 20-year sentence in a federal prison for cocaine trafficking in the US. He was arrested in 2010 in Liberia, Africa from where he was later extradited to the US.
Reed, a former Marine from Texas, was arrested in August 2019 when, according to Russian authorities, he attacked a police officer who was taking him to the car park after a night of drinking alcohol.
He was later sentenced to nine years in prison on other charges, but family members and the U.S. government say he is innocent.
