German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, before meeting with EU leaders in Versailles, said he opposed a speedy procedure for Ukraine’s membership in the Union.
Scholz referred to the association agreement that the EU and Ukraine reached in 2017 aimed at deepening political and economic ties.
“It is very important that we continue to follow the things we have decided in the past. This is the course we must follow, “said Scholz.
The German leader hinted that with the 27 EU member states, it is now difficult to make unanimous decisions on issues such as foreign policy, economy and finance.
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte also rejected Ukraine’s call for swift EU membership.
“Such a thing does not exist,” he told reporters.
The two-day meeting in Versailles is hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron, whose country currently holds the rotating presidency of the EU Council.
The French president said the EU should discuss how Europe is rethinking itself geographically, because of the war in Ukraine.
“War completely redefines the architecture of our Europe. The EU must “send a strong signal to Ukraine and the Ukrainian people at this difficult time for them.”
The Versailles meeting follows a series of transformative events for the EU. For the first time in its history, the bloc will fund the purchase of deadly weapons for the countries under attack, with an initial package of 500m euros for Ukraine.
