Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky sharply criticized the statement of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov that Adolf Hitler was of Jewish origin.
“There has been a huge scandal in Israel over these words, the reaction was immediate and yet no one is hearing denials or excuses from Moscow. All we have from there is silence… this means that the Russian leadership has forgotten all the lessons of World War II. Or maybe he never learned those lessons. “
Zelensky himself is of Jewish descent, and Moscow’s claims that it seeks the denationalization of Ukraine sound even more absurd, he said.
Israel sharply criticized Russia on Monday, calling Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s comments on Nazism and anti-Semitism “unforgivable,” including claiming that Adolf Hitler was a Jew. Israel, which summoned the Russian ambassador over the issue, said those comments blamed Jews for killing themselves in the Holocaust.
This incident marks a major decline in relations between the two countries, at a time when Israel had tried to maintain a neutral position in the war between Russia and Ukraine and maintain good relations with Russia for its security needs in the Middle East.
Asked in an interview with an Italian television channel about Russian claims that the attack on Ukraine was being carried out to “denationalize” Ukraine, Sergei Lavrov said Ukraine may still have Nazi elements, although some important figures, including the country’s president, are Jews.
