U.S. congressional security officials who resigned following the Jan. 6 attack blamed intelligence failures for deadly violence.
Testifying before Senate committees, they said the protesters “came prepared for war.” Former Congressional Police Chief Steven Sund said he was preparing for the protest, not “a coordinated military-style attack.”
He acknowledged that an FBI report warning of violence had been obtained from his agency, but said no leaders, including himself, had been notified of the report. Supporters of former US President Donald Trump have violently attacked Congress on January 6, while lawmakers have been certifying Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election.
Five people, including a police officer, have died in the riots. ““When the group reached the perimeter, it did not act like the protest groups I have ever seen.”, said Sund, a police veteran.
“A clear lack of accurate and complete intelligence across some federal agencies contributed to this event, not poor planning by the US Congress police.“, He added.
Lawmakers in the Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committees also heard how military officials were “reluctant” to send National Guard troops to protect Congress, even when it was clear that conditions there had deteriorated.
