German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has warned that tens of millions of people face starvation because of the war in Ukraine.
Ukraine is a major contributor to world food reserves, exporting significant amounts of cooking oil, corn and wheat. But these supplies are currently blocked due to the Russian occupation.
Speaking after a G7 summit in Germany, Ms Baerbock said up to 50 million people, especially in African and Middle Eastern countries, would face hunger in the coming months.
A group statement from the G7 foreign ministers said: “Russia’s war of aggression has generated one of the worst food and energy crises in recent history, which now threatens those most vulnerable across the globe.
“We are determined to accelerate a coordinated multilateral response to safeguard global food security and to stand by our most vulnerable partners in this regard.”
Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said she was ready to send ships to European ports to transport grain if Ukrainian supplies were released.
“We have to make sure that these grains are sent to the world,” she told reporters. “If not, millions of people will face hunger.”
