The invasion of Ukraine by Russia threatens to be “the beginning of World War III” that could bring an end to our civilization, warned veteran philanthropist and former financier George Soros, quoted by The Guardian.
Strongly criticizing Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping of China at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Soros said autocratic regimes are on the rise and the global economy is heading for recession. Soros harshly criticized former German Chancellor Angela Merkel for the warm relations she said she had with Moscow and Beijing.
Soros: The invasion of Ukraine was not something unexpected. The world has been increasingly involved in a war between two systems of government that are diametrically opposed to each other: open society and closed society. The invasion may have been the beginning of World War III and our civilization may not have survived it.
The 91-year-old added that the current had begun to turn against open societies after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States in 2001. “Repressive regimes are now on the rise and open societies are under siege. “Today China and Russia pose the greatest threat to an open society,” he said.

It had made special deals with Russia for gas supplies and made China Germany’s largest export market.
