A day after losing the Champions League final to Real Madrid, Liverpool are demanding an investigation into what they call “unacceptable issues” faced by fans, leading to the delay in the grand final, which many are now call it a failure for the way it was organized.
UEFA delayed the start of the match by more than 30 minutes, citing “safety reasons”. The match at the “Stade de France” in Paris did not start until 21:36, while Real beat Liverpool 1-0 at home.
Police outside the stadium fired tear gas as a small number of supporters tried to climb the security barriers.
Liverpool defender Andy Robertson said the organization of the match was a “total disaster”. Merseyside police officers posted on Twitter that it was “the worst European match they have ever worked or experienced.”
Numerous images filled the social networks showing the gathering of large crowds of fans standing in line to enter. Many claimed to have been at the stadium a few hours before the start, but were barred from entering.
“We are extremely disappointed by the problems of entering the stadium and the breach of the security perimeter that Liverpool fans faced. This is the biggest match in European football and fans should not experience the scenes we saw tonight. “We have formally requested a formal investigation into the causes of these unacceptable issues.” said the club in an official statement.
The governing body of European football, UEFA said it understands those affected by the event and will further consider these issues urgently together with the French police and authorities, and the French Football Federation.
