Spanish officials have recommended today that 864 bulls that have been at sea for two months due to coronavirus restrictions are no longer capable of transport and should therefore be killed.
A lawyer for the ship company that keeps the animals on board said they would appeal the recommendation, while video footage from the port where the animals are staying showed that preparations are being made for their landing.
Animal rights activists say the bulls were held in “cruel” conditions aboard the Karim Allah ship, which docked in the southern Spanish port of Cartagena on Thursday after failing to find buyers for the cargo for two months.
The confidential report was drafted after Spanish officials conducted a check on board the ship this week, as the captain told them that so far there had been 22 deaths from 895 animals on board, while nine were missing. Executives said the cattle were already seven months old.
The report said that animals are not capable of being transported outside the European Union and should not be allowed inside the European Union, so the best solution would be “euthanasia”.
Authorities said the animals would be killed with electric weapons, as some tests found traces of the bovine’s animal disease called “blue tongue”.
Bluetongue is an insect-borne disease which causes loss of strength and hemorrhage but does not affect humans.
