Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu received today in Ankara his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, who said that the current situation with Ukraine’s wheat has nothing to do with the food crisis.
The Turkish minister said that work is underway to release Ukrainian grain through an international ship screening mechanism.
“We are working on a cooperation mechanism between the United Nations, the Russian Federation, Ukraine and Turkey, which we believe is reasonably viable,” Cavusoglu said.
“If the world needs to export products from both Russia and Ukraine, it benefits all of us to create the conditions for that,” he added.
Russia today also rejected Western claims that the offensive in Ukraine is fueling the global food crisis, saying its offensive has not damaged farms and crops there.
“As far as we know, there is much less grain in Ukraine than the Ukrainians say, so the importance of these reserves should not be exaggerated,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
Russia and Ukraine together produce 30 percent of the world’s grain reserves.
Russia denies blocking shipments of Ukrainian grain and says Western sanctions on Moscow are contributing to the food crisis.
