Finland has marked today as rarely Flag Day with a long military procession as well as a parade of several military vehicles.
The development comes as the country has applied to join the NATO military alliance, following neighboring Russia’s attack on Ukraine.
About 1,600 soldiers from the infantry, navy, air force, reservists and cadets from the Defense University took part in the parade.
About 40 motorized military vehicles also appeared in the procession and 14 planes flew in formation over the city.
In his opening remarks, President Sauli Ninistö referred to Finnish General Adolf Ehrnrooth as saying that Finland was “a country worth defending”.
“An important foundation for Finland’s defense is the strong will of its citizens, which is now higher than before,” Ninistö said.
“We know and remember that Finland is a country worth protecting. “Together we have maintained security so far, and together we will do it tomorrow.”
Ninistö also referred to Finland’s decision to apply to NATO as a “natural step”, and not a major change in security policies.
