About 20 firefighters participated in a complex training operation to test the preparation for fire interventions in homes and especially in areas with difficulty for the entry of vehicles such as the historic area of Gjirokastra.
Accidental fires in the shopping area and upper neighborhoods have been dangerous and have a high possibility of spreading to other apartments.
The reason for the difficulties of the intervention are the water supply sewers that have kept out of operation for more than a year already many internal roads as well as the presence of overhead power cables or internet service.
The situation of available funds and support logistics is better this year while the support with funds and cash from neighboring municipalities and vice versa is a legal obligation.
The dramatic situation of fires last year in Gjirokastra in the surrounding administrative units has left behind large burned areas where several villages in Lunxhëri and Antigone were seriously threatened and 2 victims were recorded.
The municipality announced last year that it will not renew contracts with shepherds in territories where there will be fires mass that is still in force this year.
In most cases the arsons were intentional and only during the last 5 years the district of Gjirokastra has suffered damage to several thousand hectares of cultivated territory in addition to damage to property and lost lives.
