The death toll from landslides and floods in the Philippines caused by Tropical Storm Maggie reached 115 on Thursday (April 14th) according to official figures.
Dozens of people are still missing and suspected to have died after the strong storm that hit the state caused heavy rain over several days, forcing tens of thousands to enter evacuation centers.
In the central province of Leyte – most affected by Maggie – devastating landslides devastated farming and fishing communities, damaging homes and transforming the landscape.
The disaster-prone region has been regularly devastated by storms – including a direct hit by Super Typhoon Haiyan in 2013.
Emergency personnel in Abuyog municipality have pulled dozens of bodies from a coastal village devastated by a landslide on Tuesday.
Hurricane Maggie came four months after a super typhoon devastated much of the country, killing more than 400 people and leaving hundreds of thousands homeless.
The Philippines – ranked among the countries most vulnerable to the effects of climate change – is hit by an average of 20 storms each year.
