“I’m a good swimmer and I want to help people,” said the boy from Togo who was among the 71 survivors rescued days after the boat sank, killing at least 30 people.
But the acts of a teenager from Togo were praised by the media after publishing a video where he was carrying a baby during last week’s tragedy.
The 17-year-old, who has not yet been publicly identified, swam to rescue the child and the footage appears to have been recorded by French media group Brut.
He and others were helped onto the ship of the Médecins Sans Frontières group that came to the site of the disaster.
Michael Bunel, the French photojournalist on the rescue ship, said that when they arrived they heard the teenager shouting: “There’s a baby!”
The crew then instructed a flight attendant to pull them on board and give medical aid to the baby. The latter and her mother were further evacuated to Malta.
Rescuers said some of the survivors had burn marks from the boat’s fuel.
The refugees were allowed to land in the Italian town of Taranto.
According to Doctors Without Borders, at least 8,500 have died or gone missing and 95,000 have returned to Libya while trying to cross the Mediterranean in the past two years.
