Two days after the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the Liberal Democratic Party has again won the majority of seats in the Japanese parliament according to polls.
The Liberal Democratic Party and coalition partner Komeito are expected to win 83-125 seats in the upper house.
Shinzo Abe led this party until 2020, where he then resigned, but without giving up the campaign, during which he was killed while giving a speech, while it is not yet known whether the attack on him brought more support to the political force .
“I think it’s important that we were able to finish the election,” Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told NHK, adding that he wants to address the pandemic, Ukraine-related issues and inflation.
Kishida had insisted that the election go ahead despite the killing, saying “we must never allow violence to suppress speech”.
Abe’s assassination shocked the nation and sent shock waves around the world. The man accused of killing him, 41-year-old Tetsuya Yamagami, is in custody and has told investigators he targeted Abe because he believed the politician was linked to an unnamed organization.
