In his first major foreign policy speech, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said relations between the United States and China were the “greatest geopolitical” test of the century.
He made it clear, however, that President Biden’s administration would “manage” ties with China “from a position of power.”
“This requires engagement in diplomacy and international organizations, because where we have withdrawn, China has filled the gap. Washington will continue to compete, cooperate and, if necessary, be an “adversary” with China, the only country with economic, diplomatic, military and technological power that can seriously challenge a stable and open international system, all the rules , the values and relationships that make the world work the way we want it to“, Says Blinken.
Chief diplomat Blinken’s speech unveiled President Biden’s strategy to “renew America’s power” in the global arena, with the promise of “leading through diplomacy.” Throughout his presidency, Mr. Biden’s predecessor, President Donald Trump, waged a fierce trade war with Beijing, insisting the coronavirus originated from a laboratory in the Chinese city of Wuhan, and challenging Beijing ‘s military control of the Sea area. of South China where several regional countries have claims.
