The Special Court of Appeals sets the date of December 20 for the first retrial session of the former Minister of Interior, Saimir Tahiri and the former head of the Vlora Police, Jaeld Çela.
The Special Appeal also announced the addition to the trial panel with the delegated judge Engert Pëllumbi.
But despite this, the trio of judges is not complete, as one of the two previous judges, Ilirjana Olldashi, has resigned.
So the Court must again delegate a third judge who will join Pellumbi and Daniela Shirka.
The Supreme Court gave a procedural victory to Tahiri, when it decided to overturn the decision of 26 June 2020 of the Special Court of Appeal and return the case for review to another body of the Special Court of Appeal.
Tahiri was targeted by the judiciary in October 2017, after Italian authorities cracked down on a structured criminal group in marijuana trafficking, led by the Habilaj brothers – Tahiri’s relatives.
The prosecution charged Tahiri with drug trafficking and demanded his arrest, but the Socialist parliamentary majority blocked the arrest request and attacked the prosecution’s investigation as biased.
In September 2019, Tahiri was acquitted of drug trafficking charges and structured criminal group, but was sentenced by the Serious Crimes Court to 5 years in prison for abuse of office, a sentence which was converted to 3.4 years due to trial cut.
The first-instance decision was overturned by the Special Court of Appeals, which remanded the case for reconsideration.
