The executive branch of the European Union has proposed a ban on coal imports from Russia in what would be the first sanction aimed at the country’s lucrative energy industry.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU should increase pressure on Vladimir Putin after what she described as horrific crimes committed in Bucha near Kiev.
She said the ban on coal imports was worth four billion euros (3. 3.3 billion) a year – adding that the EU had already begun working on additional sanctions, including oil imports.
Ms. von der Leyen did not mention natural gas. A consensus among the 27 EU member states on gas targeting would be more difficult to secure given the support of many countries in its imports from Russia.
